MARINE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD NOMINATION FOR WEYMOUTH COLLEGE STUDENT

Weymouth College student Joe Warley, who completed his Entry to Employment (e2e) course in December at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, has been nominated for a ‘Marine Achievement Award’.

The award will be presented by John Tweed, Director of Development at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, at Weymouth Pavilion, on Thursday 10th January 2008.

Joe Warley said; "The e2e course has offered me a fantastic opportunity for learning and future employment. It has really helped me on my way to getting my dream job in water sports, which I start in March. I am pleased to be nominated for this award and am looking forward to Thursday."

Sailing Curriculum Development Officer for the College, Dr Holly Henderson commented; “When Joe first started on the course I don’t think he thought he would achieve as much as he has, his attitude and commitment has be outstanding and I am delighted that he has been nominated for the award.  Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy is an awesome and inspiring venue and it is fantastic that youngsters like Joe have the opportunity to do this course”.  Alex Sergison, e2e Tutor said; "Teaching Joe on the e2e course has been a very rewarding experience and he deserves the nomination, I know for a fact that Joe, as have all the students, has got a great deal out of it.”

Conal Low-Grier added; “Joe is the fifth student from the Sport and Public Services to be nominated for an award on Thursday night. This highlights the development and achievements that are occurring in this area.”

The e2e course, run out of the Academy, is ideal for young people with an interest in water sports, the outdoors or just sport in general, equipping them with the basic certificates they need to start a career in the marine industry. Plenty of time is set aside to develop personal and social skills and to work on numeracy and literacy levels, combined with crucial work placements with local businesses tailored to give a range of experience in this diverse industry.

John Tweed added; “The Academy is delighted to be presenting and sponsoring the Marine Achievement Award and it is fantastic news that Joe has been nominated. Joe was one of the first students to start the e2e course here at the Academy last July and his success highlights our ongoing partnership with Weymouth College, providing benefits and employment opportunities for youngsters across the social spectrum.”
