The Queen Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh Visit The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy
12 June
Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, visited the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) on June 11th. The Academy provides access to the best small boat sailing waters in the world and is the first venue to be completed for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Royal Party met Bronze Medallist, Chris Draper and Olympic hopefuls in training, including Peter Greenhalgh, Andrea Brewster, Alison Young, Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes, as well as local people who are learning to sail as part of WPNSA’s programme with the Chesil Trust - which offers subsidised Royal Yachting Association sailing courses many of which are run in conjunction with SailLaser for children and young people who are disabled or at a social disadvantage.
The scheme is just one of the WPNSA’s and SailLaser’s many community involvement initiatives including the opportunity for individuals to ‘Sail for £5’,or for family groups of up to four people to have a sail for £10 and which will be available to the public again on July 11th as part of the ‘Spirit of the Sea’ Festival.
John Tweed, Chief Executive of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, said: “It is an enormous honour for the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy that both Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh have seen firsthand the completed Olympic Delivery Authority works and the Chesil Trust ‘Sail for a Fiver’ programme. We have given The Royal Party a real flavour of how important this facility is for the whole community, not just the competitive sailors”.

20 February
The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), is working in partnership with VisitBritain, the national tourism agency, to provide a quality assessed accommodation search facility aimed at participants and spectators wanting to experience the sailing events at the venue in the run up to the Games.
WPNSA is the first UK Olympic venue to be completed and has an established global reputation for its outstanding facilities. In addition, the surrounding waters of Portland Harbour and Weymouth Bay are some of the best sailing waters on the planet.
The user friendly search is a valuable tool for finding, an extensive range of quality assessed accommodation for a visit to the 2012 sailing venue. The consumer can filter their search by star rating, facilities, property type and the results can be displayed on a map making it easy to see the proximity to the venue. VisitBritain is working with the Government and other agencies to get 75 per cent of accommodation providers involved in quality accreditation schemes by 2012.
Chris Knight, Business Manager of Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, added: ‘We are excited to be able to host this venture with VisitBritain, it will give a new dimension to services for traveling sailors. It enables visitors to the Academy to find accommodation nearby directly through our website, through a source that we know if reliable’.
Kenny Boyle, Director Distribution Services at VisitBritain, said: ‘We're delighted to work with such a prestigious venue on this project, one of the first users of our white label accommodation search. Organisations must take every opportunity to remain ahead of the crowd and this service offers visitors to the WPNSA site an excellent service alongside those they already offer. Our ambition is to help all parts of the industry improve their profitability and offer consumer services to help them widen their reach’.
As deliverer of the official Pre Games Training Camps website, which can be viewed at trainingcamps.london2012.com, VisitBritain provided National Olympic and Paralympics Committees with details of over 600 assessed facilities available in the UK for the Games. This data, along with that provided to the WPNSA website, is held in the National Tourism Product database managed by VisitBritain with the participation of the nations and regions. The Database also powers the searches on VisitBritain's family of websites and is home to more than 40,000 quality assessed accommodation types, 12,000 attractions and 5,000 events. The white label is fully brandable and customisable by partners and increases the reach of tourism product to new distribution channels.

Gold medal-winning sailor unveils world-class new sailing facilities
3 December
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has completed its construction work on the first venue for the 2012 Games it was announced, Friday November 28th, as work was completed on new enhanced sailing facilities at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA).
The completion of works at Weymouth & Portland was joined by the announcement that the National Lottery has raised £375 million of its £750 million target for the London 2012 Games, through sales of specially-designated Lottery games. The money raised will go towards funding the provision of facilities and supporting infrastructure for the 2012 Games.
The Olympic and Paralympic sailing events in 2012 will be hosted at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy which offers world-class facilities and some of the best small boat sailing conditions in the world. The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and its contractors Dean & Dyball have now completed work to enhance the existing sailing facilities with the construction of a new permanent 250m slipway and new race-boat parking, lifting and mooring facilities. The completion of the project delivers an early legacy of world-class facilities for elite athletes and the local community to use.
Beijing Gold medal winning sailor Paul Goodison joined ODA Director Ralph Luck, Olympic Gold-medallist Jonathan Edwards from the London Organising Committee (LOCOG), Jim Knight MP for Dorset and WPNSA Chairman Edward Leask to unveil the new facilities today.
Paul Goodison, the World number one Laser sailor and Weymouth local who won Gold in the Laser class at the Beijing Games, said: “Winning gold in Qingdao was an amazing experience; I am now looking forward to 2012, training and competing out of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on my home waters”
ODA Director Ralph Luck said: “Completing construction on our first venue for 2012 is a huge milestone and delivers an early legacy of world-class facilities in Weymouth & Portland for sailors of all ages and abilities to use well ahead of 2012. Delivering our first venue on time and to budget keeps us firmly on track as work accelerates on this unprecedented project.
“The completion of these works is only the start for Weymouth & Portland and the huge investment going into the area shows how the Games can act as a catalyst for regeneration, delivering sporting and economic benefits before, during and long after 2012.”
Edward Leask, WPNSA Chairman, said: “The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy is the first 2012 venue to complete construction, the enhanced facilities secure WPNSA’s status as the premier world class venue for the Olympic and Paralympic Games as well as catering for the local Weymouth and Portland communities through our active sustainable legacy programme. This is an exciting time for British yachting following the medal success at the Beijing Games and I am confident the Academy will help future GBR podium finishes in 2012 and beyond.”
Andy Crawford, Dean & Dyball Civil Engineering’s Managing Director said:
“The successful completion of this project gives us all a great sense of satisfaction. I am very proud Dean & Dyball has had the chance to be involved in delivering these world class sailing facilities for the benefit of the local community as well as the Games themselves.”
Along with the completion of works at Weymouth & Portland, it was also announced today that the National Lottery has raised £375 million of its £750 million target for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, through sales of specially-designated Lottery games. All the money raised from sales of these designated games will go towards funding the provision of facilities and supporting infrastructure for the 2012 Games.
Janet Paraskeva, Chair of the Olympic Lottery Distributor said: “National Lottery players are making a major contribution to London 2012 and it is great to see the completion of enhanced facilities at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on the day we reach the halfway mark to the £750m we will raise through Lottery games designated to London 2012. Thanks to the National Lottery world-class facilities have been created for our elite sailors that will also provide an important resource for the local community now and until 2012 and beyond.”
The ODA’s completion of enhanced sailing facilities is only the first phase in the wider regeneration of Weymouth & Portland ahead of the 2012 Games. Dean & Reddyhoff, developers for the South West Regional Development Agency (SWRDA), are also well underway on work on a new 560-berth commercial marina at Osprey Quay of which 250 berths will be used during the 2012 Games. The marina is expected to be open in Spring 2009 and will include retail and industrial development bringing enormous social and economic regeneration to the local area.
The enhanced facilities that the ODA has constructed will further enhance WPNSA’s reputation as a world-class training and competition venue. With the new facilities in place, the Academy is already lined up to host a number of classes in the RSX World Championship, the Techno Junior Windsurfing World Championship and the Skandia sail for Gold Regatta in 2009 as well as the IFDS, Disabled world championship in 2011. Test events ahead of the 2012 Games will also take place in 2010 and 2011.

24 November
The new Chairman of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), the 2012 sailing event venue, has now officially taken the helm of the globally recognised yachting venue. Edward Leask was announced as Chairman, today November 24th, following a lifetime’s involvement with the marine sporting world; representing GBR on the water and launching yachting into the sports marketing industry. Edward will be joined by Jeremy Pope OBE as Vice Chairman at WPNSA. Jeremy is very active in the South West as the past Deputy Chairman of the South West of England Regional Development Agency.
Both Edward and Jeremy have been involved with development of the Academy since its inception during 2000 through to present day as the official 2012 sailing event venue.
Edward Leask, Chairman of WPNSA, commented, ‘I am very proud to take the helm of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy as Chairman following on from the inspirational Bill Ludlow. I am looking forward with Jeremy Pope to continuing Bill’s commitment to a sustainable legacy programme through which everyone has the opportunity to try water sports. This is an exciting time for British yachting following the medal success in Qingdao and I feel the new facilities at the Academy will help future GBR podium finishes in 2012 and beyond. We have a strong team at WPNSA including new Directors; sailing legend Ben Ainslie, Rod Carr OBE and John Derbyshire. We are confident the venue will live up to expectations as a world class facility for local dinghy regattas through to racing yacht events with continued support from our sponsors Scottish and Southern Energy and Charles Russell LLP’.

This is my dream venue and I could not have written a script better than this. For us it ticks all the boxes so this is going to be an absolutely brilliant venue for 2012."
THE ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN IN SPORT AWARD, Scottish and Southern Energy – Powering the National Sailing Academy
At the start of 2007, Scottish and Southern Energy went into partnership with the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy with a view to monitoring the performance of their emerging technologies and using the venue as a test bed for environmental best practice. The association also had the goal of helping the Academy achieve a target set by LOCOG that 20% of electricity generated be done so by renewable energy by the end of 2011. As well as providing a full environmental impact assessment and an active recycling programme, the sponsorship also donated funds for the Academy’s youth development and reduced-rate community sailing schemes. As a result of the strategy, the Academy’s level of renewable electricity increased by 37% in 2007, while SSE has immeasurably improved the performance of its emerging technologies from an environmental standpoint – a discernible legacy of environmental concern in action that the judges emphasised was a vital objective of such a campaign.

Scott claims Finn crown in compelling end to 2008 RYA National Ranking Series
20 October 2008
Giles Scott nicked the 2008 RYA Olympic Classes National Ranking Series Finn class title by the narrowest of margins as he won the third and final Series event at Weymouth and Portland National Academy (WPNSA) this weekend (18-19 October). Scott, the reigning World Under 21 Finn champion, went into the showdown neck-and-neck with Skandia Team GBR teammate Andrew Mills, both sailors having picked up first and second-placed overall finishes at the previous two Series events. But it was 21-year-old Scott who edged the overall 2008 Series crown by just a single point, picking up two race wins and three seconds at WPNSA to finish the deciding event on eight points to Mills’ nine to take the regatta win and the title.
World Junior 470 champions Hannah Mills and Katrina Hughes made no mistake in wrapping up Series women’s double-handed dinghy victory, winning their second successive Ranker event courtesy of four race wins and a second. With their fifth place at the Series opener, the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta, last month, it meant the pair finished on seven points in the final 470 Women’s standings with Sophie Weguelin and Sophie Ainsworth their nearest challengers on 15 points in total.
A second consecutive event victory for up-and-coming windsurfer Richard Hamilton also helped him clinch the overall RS:X 9.5 title, taking four out of a possible six race wins to hold off the challenge of Elliot Carney and take the Series win with 11 points to Carney’s 12. Meanwhile, in the 49er class Paul Campbell-James and Mark Asquith clinched final event victory to also make it back-to-back Series event wins for the pair who comfortably took the Series honours from John Pink and Rick Peacock, who finished third this weekend behind Britain’s Beijing 2008 49er representatives Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes, Skandia Sail for Gold winners last month.
Series consistency was the key for Luke Patience and Chris Grube in tying up the Men’s 470 title. The promising duo may have settled for second behind Skandia Team GBR’s World and European champions Nic Asher and Elliott Willis at WPNSA but third and second place finishes at the first two Series regattas saw Patience and Grube end the Series on seven points with James Rusden and Dan Schieber second overall on 16.
RYA Youth Squad sailor and RS:X 8.5 World silver medallist Ali Masters also eased to the Series 8.5 crown despite a fourth-placed finish this weekend. The 16-year-old from Somerset followed up his Sail for Gold second with a Ranker 2 win to end the Series on seven points. A second-place finish for Sam Latham this weekend saw him jump to second in the overall Series standings tied on level points with Beth Williamson but given the nod on account of his higher place finish at the final Ranker.
The RYA National Ranking Series is designed to provide opportunities for aspiring Olympians and all UK Olympic Classes sailors to race against world class performers. This weekend also saw double Olympic 470 silver medallist Joe Glanfield team up with ISAF Youth World 29er champion helm Frances Peters in the 470, Glanfield passing on his expert advice to the 17-year-old RYA Youth Squad talent.
2008 RYA Olympic Classes National Ranking Series final standings (overall points after three events – cumulative scores of final placings from each Ranker event):

RYA Match Racing Finals
15 October
Mark Campbell-James jumped to joint second on the all-time winners list after claiming his third RYA National Match Racing Championship crown at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) this weekend (10-12 October).
In a riveting three-day contest, the 28-year-old from Godalming overcame an indifferent round-robin to hit back and defeat defending champion Nick Cherry in the semi-finals before completing a three-race clean sweep of Mason Woodworth in the final to claim his hat-trick of RYA National titles on the 20 th anniversary of the trophy being awarded.
Campbell-James, who won his two other titles in 2004 (joint winner with brother Paul on percentage of wins) and 2005, now sits tied with current ISAF World Match Racing Champion Ian Williams on the overall winners’ chart with two-time Olympian and America’s Cup sailor Andy Beadsworth’s five National crowns won between 1992 and 2000 putting him at the top of the pile.
Campbell-James was unable to compete on Friday, Graham Sunderland taking the helm for the opening four races and picking up two wins and two losses. Campbell-James returned to skipper for the final two days but lost his first two races on Saturday to leave his team struggling on two wins and four losses.
However a change in tactics paid off for the team and they snuck into the semi-finals with five wins and four losses from their nine races, edging through ahead of Tom Makey, who also finished the round robin with five wins, on account of Campbell-James winning their head-to-head.
A delighted Campbell-James said: “It does feel good to have won three titles but we weren’t thinking about that going into the event, it was more about wanting to win because we have annoyingly missed out in the past two years so we are really pleased.
“I haven’t been match racing since the RYA Winter Challenge finals back in March and on Saturday we just seemed really slow for some reason and we didn’t have the boat speed. We decided then to assume that we were slower than everyone else and we would try to take everyone out on the start line and then try to stay ahead of them.
“I think Nick would have been the favourite going into the semi but although we lost the one semi-final race to him on Saturday we felt completely different on Sunday, there was a nice eight-10 knots and we seemed to go a bit better; we felt if we got a good start we could sail away, which was the complete opposite to the day before.”
Two-time and reigning champ Cherry had romped into the semis in pole position having completed an emphatic nine-race clean sweep. Woodworth’s Investec Private Bank team only lost to Cherry in the round-robin putting him in second overall and seeing him paired with third-placed Ali Hall for the semis, Hall having picked up six round robin wins.
Cherry got the upper hand over Campbell-James in the first encounter of the semis but with the deciding two races of the showdown contested on day three of the Championships, a rejuvenated Campbell-James hit back to level the scores before booking his place in the finals with race three victory, Cherry being forced to return to the start line three times enabling Campbell-James to sail into an unassailable lead.
In the other semi, Hall, who secured an impressive third place at the RYA Winter Challenge Series Grand Final in March, won the opener against Woodworth but like Campbell-James, Woodworth saved his best for Sunday and sealed back-to-back wins to land his finals spot.
But the first-to-three-points final was all one-way traffic as Campbell-James, determined to avoid a repeat of the disappointment of the past two years, clinically nailed three straight wins to convincingly wrap up the title and lift the Eacott Trophy.
Cherry also completed a three-win clean sweep over Hall in the petit-final to seal third place overall.

The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) is a world class sailing venue. WPNSA effectively promotes the sport of sailing to all levels of competence and ability, through courses, training and events, whilst supporting and working closely with the local community. WPNSA hosts a number of high profile regattas throughout the year and boasts fantastic conference and event facilities. Chief executive of the London 2012 Organising Committee Paul Deighton, who recently visited the Academy, says, "If you look at the backdrop it was as though the gods made this for a sailing event.

WPNSA marks Paralympic hand over with live broadcast from Beijing
18 Spetember
Official 2012 sailing venue, the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) marked the Beijing to London Paralympics hand over yesterday, Wednesday, September 17th. WPSNA watched the closing ceremony in Beijing on a live broadcast, in the company of local guests.
The festivities commenced with youth sailors from Gloucester and Devizes showing their boat handling skills, followed by 14 disabled sailors all from the South West taking to the water with Sail Laser, the live official hand over in Beijing was then broadcast for all at the Academy. Visitors to the event at WPNSA included Jim Knight, MP, Rod Carr, CEO of the RYA and a representative from LOCOG. This final hand over promises to mark the start of a 4 year party atmosphere throughout the whole community, building up to the 2012 sporting event.
The ceremony comes shortly after a slightly disappointing finish for the Paralympics Team GBR in Qingdao. Conditions were always going to make difficult sailing and despite some huge efforts and some outstanding performances, Team GBR, which included Weymouth based sailors, Alexandra Rickham and Helena Lucas, finished in fifth, sixth and seventh places across all three fleets.
Mark Stubbings, commented, ‘The teams’ preparation and dedication to the event was as thorough as the Olympians. They showed in the Paralympic Test Event in May that they are very capable, but on the day things just didn’t go their way. It is clear we have a lot to look forward to from the team in 2012 and the hand over ceremony today signified the start of their new quest for medals’.
WPNSA will be releasing details shortly on an Olympic celebration party scheduled for November 2008 at Weymouth.

WPNSA hosts 29er & 49er National Championships
1st September
The 2012 sailing venue, the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, was again in the spotlight last week, ending August 29th. Both the 49er and 29er sailing classes, originally developed from the Australian 18ft Skiff design, chose the Weymouth and Portland based venue for their 2008 National Championships.
The 29er National Championships, finished on August 29th with a total of 57 boats entered, the 29er class acts as a springboard for young sailors to make the transition to the Olympic 49er class. Going into the final day of the 29er National Championships, Bleddyn Mon and Tom Humphries won for a second time over Max Richardson and Alex Groves who had to count their OCS in the final results. Second place went to the French team, Kevin Fisher and Glenn Gouron who were hot on the heels of the National Champions. Top girls were, Becky Diamond and Fiona Hampshire in 5th place overall, an excellent result.
The 49er National Championships completed on August 25th was a competitive affair with 35 entrants including visitors from Finland, South Africa and Germany looking to make the most of the high standard of racing, which included Olympic Development Squad members and former Olympians.
Despite the high standard there was one standalone performance at the head of the fleet as Skandia Team GBR sailors John Pink and Rick Peacock sailed a near flawless regatta picking up seven race wins and two 3rd place finishes in the nine race series. This amazing performance saw them crowned 49er National Champions a full 11 points clear of Dylan Fletcher and Alan Sign in second place. Third place was secured by the Finnish pair of Lauri Lehtinen and Heizzi Soininen a further 6 points back.

International Tracking of Tempest World Championships at 2012 Sailing Venue
29th August
The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) successfully tracked racing from the Tempest World Championships across the World using the new Race-Trax Live Positioning System. This state of the art positioning system, attached to competing boats, allows friends and family to get closer to the action via a live internet feed of the positions of the boats as they compete in the racing.
Throughout the week long competition the conditions challenged the sailors with winds between 15 to 35 knots. Despite the testing conditions, the benefits of the legendary Weymouth Bay sailing waters were demonstrated with 9 races successfully and safely sailed.
The 2008 Tempest World Champion was not decided until the penultimate race. Heading into the deciding race only two boats could win the title with the 2007 Champions Philippe Boite and Reges Viateur holding a slight advantage over the German pair of Frank Weigelt and Christian Rusitsch. A tight fought race saw the French cross the line first but the Germans were duly crowned champions when it emerged the French boat had been over the line at the start, a decision that was confirmed through the Race Trax technology onboard the start boat.
Final results:
1. GER 1087, Frank Weigelt and Christian Rusitsch 11 points
2. FRA 1182 , Philippe Boite and Reges Viateur 12 points
3. GER 1187 ,Christian Schafer and Andreas Mader 15 points
At the prize giving the competitors paid tribute to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy as a world class venue facilitating 9 races, as well as Race Trax Live Positioning system being hailed a complete success.
With initial trials now completed, the Race Trax Live Positioning System will now be used for the upcoming Sail for Gold Regatta, 15 to 20 September at the 2012 sailing venue in Weymouth and Portland. This will be the first International Olympic classes event since the 2008 Games and will attract some of the medal heroes from Qingdao. Everyone can follow the action Live and through playback thanks to the new Race Trax Live Positioning System.
To view races from the 2008 Tempest World Championships or to watch the upcoming Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta log on to www.race-trax.com or www.wpnsa.org.uk.

WPNSA to host Tempest Worlds and New Race-Trax Technology
14 August 2008
The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy will be playing host to not only the Tempest World Championships from August 16 to 22 but also a new form of technology, ‘Race-Trax Live Positioning’.
With over 30 boats from 9 countries entered, Race-Trax will be used throughout the international fleet. The technology originally developed from a system currently used by the military will provide each boat’s position in the fleet, updated second by second to within half a metre’s accuracy.
Transmitters will be fitted to each of the boats and to the five race marks. The inclusion of modules also on the ODM and committee boat will allow race officers to accurately check if boats are over the line at start time and transmitters on race marks will aid race management in setting accurate courses for the competitors.
The data, including position, speed, course over the ground, heading, wind speed and direction, will be transmitted from the water to Race-Trax servers allowing LIVE! viewing of the racing by interested parties, via the internet at www.race-trax.com, anywhere in the world. The Race-Trax support team will also be on hand for the duration of the event so feel free to arrange on site or phone interviews with them via Cailah Leask, Cailah.leask@fasttracksailing.com .
The Tempest World Championships are part of an ongoing test of Race-Trax technology by the Royal Yachting Association, which will include the Skandia Sail For Gold Regatta, also being held at the Weymouth Sailing Academy from September 15 to 20, 2008.
ENDS
NOTES TO EDITORS
About Race-Trax
Through Race-Trax Live Positioning media will gain added insight for reporting either from the event’s media centre or from their office, friends and family will be able to follow the live racing from the comfort of their desk if cannot attend the event in person, and sponsors will benefit from the added opportunities and coverage their brands will receive.
Rob Andrews, RYA Competition Manager, said:
“These will be ground-breaking experiments to look at the accuracy and use of the devices in eliminating OCS and giving sailors a 100 per cent fair start on every occasion, eliminating the need for general recalls if a boat is hidden… Once successfully implemented, it will be a significant step forward for our sport when combined with the other advantages that the devices give us to spectators and safety. We know the exact position of every boat and what speed they are doing - just imagine how safe this makes our sport.”

Successful 2008 Dorset Schools Regatta at WPNSA
15 July 2008
Thursday 10th July saw the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) playing host to the Dorset Schools Regatta.
This was the second inter-school regatta organised by SailLaser following a successful event last year. This year the event attracted 40 local children who participated in 2 races experiencing gusty force 3 to 4 conditions.
Many of the children have sailed at the Academy before with SailLaser some as part of a 10 week programme and others during after school programmes.
The Thomas Hardye School in Dorchester won the Inter School Cup with the gold and silver fleet results listed below:
Gold Fleet 1st Henrietta Dutton and Tom Wray Thomas Hardye School
2nd Philip De Iongh and Matt Granger Thomas Hardye School
Silver Fleet 1st Caroline Milree and Selena Mansell Sir John Colfox School
2nd Luke Brain and Laura Nairn Budmouth School
The regatta was funded by the Chesil Trust, the Dorset based charity that assists local young or disabled people to engage in sailing and other water sports. ‘We are very proud as the Chesil Trust to have supported this annual event and feel it is a logical step for us to support our young sailors in the region, the Dorset Schools Regatta is an important first step for many youngsters into the dinghy racing world’, noted David Dunn, Chairman of the Chesil Trust.
A number of the Dorset Schools Regatta competitors regularly sail with SailLaser at WPNSA as part of the Royal Yachting Association’s Onboard programme catering to youths, running weekly courses. Some of the youth sailors also volunteer to help run the event logistics at the Academy and gain valuable experience.
Mark Stubbings, Chief Executive of WPNSA, comments, ‘It is a pleasure to be able to provide a suitable venue for the local children to get involved in this great sport. We are delighted that the 2008 event was a success and we look forward to welcoming the local schools back to the Academy for future regattas.’

ABOUT THE WEYMOUTH AND PORTLAND NATIONAL SAILING ACADEMY:
The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) is a world class sailing venue. WPNSA effectively promotes the sport of sailing to all levels of competence and ability, through courses, training and events, whilst supporting and working closely with the local community. WPNSA hosts a number of high profile regattas throughout the year and boasts fantastic conference and event facilities. Chief executive of the London 2012 Organising Committee Paul Deighton, who recently visited the Academy, says, "If you look at the backdrop it was as though the gods made this for a sailing event.

BILL LUDLOW, CHAIRMAN AT WPNSA 1999 - 2008
5 July 2008
It is with sorrow that the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), host venue to the 2012 sailing events, today (July 5, 2008) announces the passing of Bill Ludlow, Chairman of WPNSA from 1999 to 2008.
Edward Leask, current Vice Chairman of WPNSA shared his thoughts on behalf of the Academy’s team, ‘It was with great sadness that we heard the news that Bill Ludlow, Chairman of the Sailing Academy, had passed away on Friday evening, July 4th, 2008.
Bill was a person who had the vision and determination to drive forward the concept of a National Sailing Academy in Weymouth and Portland and was a founder member of the not for profit company formed in 1999 to take the project forward to this current day. Bill was a key player in enabling WPNSA to be successful as a 2008 Sport Industry Award winner for Environmental Concern in Sport with an unbeatable active Olympic legacy programme and ODA approved facilities.
Bill has been at the helm of WPNSA since the idea started and the subsequent development of the concept Academy to an Olympic venue in less than 6 years, demonstrating his enigmatic leadership and vision. His passion for sailing and for all maritime aspects meant that his influence reached out across the whole of Portland Harbour, Weymouth Bay and beyond. Bill has worked tirelessly for WPNSA and enabling access for local community people to sail at the Academy’.
In addition to the Chairmanship of WPNSA, Bill was the driving force behind the ‘Chesil Trust’, a registered charity with the objective of assisting young or disabled people to experience sailing. The Chesil Trust has been responsible for the very successful 'Sail for a Fiver' programme which has, to date, enabled over 2000 young people to taste their first experience of sailing.
David Dunn, Chairman of the Chesil Trust spoke on behalf of the charity, ‘we are all deeply upset by the news, Bill will be remembered for his contributions to many organisations in the area, but his work with The Chesil Trust reflected his passion for sailing and his wish that as many young people as possible, from all backgrounds, should be able to experience watersports.’
Bill will be very much missed for his enthusiasm, determination and fantastic sense of humour, the WPNSA team will be considering an appropriate way of permanently recording his contribution to the Academy. In the meantime, our thoughts and sympathies are with his wife Di and the rest of his family and friends.
Please note that Bill Ludlow’s family have asked not be contacted directly at this very sad time, please instead contact Cailah.leask@fasttracksailing.com M 077 8529 4321 for all press queries.
All are welcome at WPNSA to relax and watch the Moth Dinghy World Championships July 5 – 11 and the Dorset National Schools Regatta on July 10.

CST Composites 2008 Moth World Championships – Weymouth UK 5-11 July 2008
5 July 2008
The largest ever fleet of foiling moths have assembled for the CST Composites 2008 Moth World Championships.
With 99 entries from 18 countries, it is the second largest fleet of Moths to attend a world title event and Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy is a hive of activity with sail measurement and much preventative maintenance taking place.
With such a large fleet, the boats will be split into two groups for the first three days of the qualifying series to determine who will be selected for the Gold and Silver fleets. The final two days will be a sail-off to determine the event champion.
Unfortunately the invitation race scheduled for today has been cancelled due to too much wind. Conditions from Monday are forecast to be more conducive to foiling with 15 to 20 knots, with conditions further easing later in the week.
Regatta favourites Simon Payne (GBR) and Scott Babbage (AUS) have been performing solidly in the lead-up sailing, however in the breezier conditions some other contenders have been performing well in practice races including John Harris and Andrew McDougall from Australia and Arnaud Psarofaghis from Switzerland.
French sailing champion Sébastien Josse has taken time out from his busy schedule preparing for Vendée Globe [the round world non-stop single handed sailing race] campaign to join the Foiling Moth ranks on his Bladerider. "I am going there to sail a bit, but mostly to learn because there are loads of little tuning and tricks to know that I would take hours to pick up because I am not very experienced sailing a foiling moth. After a week of sailing I will know the basics. I get on well with Rohan Veal [2007 world champion] and I count on him to give me advice so that when I get back to France I will know how to handle the boat more. Anyway, the physical training is good training for the Vendée Globe".
The International Moth Class Association President – Mark Robinson is excited with influx of new competitors to the Moth class "there is so much interest in the event and the word is spreading about the foiling Moth. It is very exciting to be involved in the Moth Class at this time".

CST Composites Moth World Championships
27 June 2008
Over the next 7 days the largest ever fleet of foiling moths will begin gathering in Weymouth for the CST Composites Moth World Championships.
A fleet of 80 to 100 boats is expected with competitors coming from all corners of the globe. As more sailors master the tricky art of hydrofoil sailing there is expected to be much greater depth at the top of the fleet than at Lake Garda in 2007 when foil master Rohan Veal walked away with the title.
2006 World Champion and defending European Champion Simon Payne recently showed his good form with a clear win in the UK National Championships held in Weymouth.?Payne has been putting in a big effort to win back his title and is sure to be a contender this time around. Payne says "I feel OK about this event, I understand there are factors I can't control and contenders I've never met, but compared to last year I feel well prepared and I'm happy to be coming into this event after winning the UK nationals."
Others who will be vying for top honours include Australian Champion Mat Belcher and last years World Championship runner up Scott Babbage who says he feels much better prepared than this time last year. "I am coming off 4 months preparation rather than only 2 months last time around. I have much more confidence in my equipment making it through the event, however, I don't think I have the same speed advantage that I had last time ?that's going to make it difficult to better my last year's number 2 finish". ?
With development of hulls and foils becoming more focussed on fine-tuning over the past 12 months many of the top competitors have turned their attention to their rigs in a constant search for speed.?
The new CST 40mm high modulus mast has quickly found its place on most boats at the front of the fleet with the windage gains over the previous 51mm masts being exploited.?
The fit between event sponsor CST Composites and the Moth class is a natural one as Manager Clive Watts notes: "CST has been affiliated with the Moth Class for many years and shares a common interest in development, innovation and performance. The timing of sponsoring the 2008 World Championships coincided perfectly with the introduction of our new high modulus spar technology and new online store HYPERLINK "http://www.carbonfibreexpress.com"www.carbonfibreexpress.com"?

Renowned Yachting Photographer to exhibit at WPNSA
19 May 2008
Internationally renowned yachting photographer Ingrid Abery will be exhibiting at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) this summer.
Ingrid has worked on some of the sailing world’s foremost events, including the 32nd America’s Cup, the highly charged TP52 Med Circuit, the Clipper Round The World Race, Super Yacht Cup, the Caribbean Regattas and the glittering Mediterranean Classic Yacht Circuit. She will also be photographing the Olympic Games in Qingdao, China this August.
Ingrid specialises in shooting most water-related sports for both advertising and editorial commissions. Sports covered include yachting, dinghy racing, power boating, kite surfing, windsurfing, water-skiing and barefoot water-skiing among others.
WPNSA, venue for the 2012 Olympic sailing events, is set on the stunning Jurassic Coast, the only World Heritage Site in the UK. An extraordinary sailing venue, catering for all standards of sailors, from Olympic stars to absolute beginners, the Academy has also established a reputation as one of the best events venues in the area. Sir Keith Mills has described WPNSA as "a great example of an Olympic venue, one of the best in the world".
Mark Stubbings, Chief Executive of WPNSA, comments, “We are delighted that Ingrid will be exhibiting a selection of her work here at the Academy. Ingrid’s passion for the sea and the outdoors speaks through her work. The exhilaration of a scene or a moment in time is conveyed perfectly through her striking images.”
Ingrid Abery comments, “I am extremely proud to be showing my work at the Academy, the home of British sailing. WPNSA is a fantastic venue and one that as a nation we should be very proud of. I hope that the public will have as much fun attending the exhibition as I had in taking the shots! Chasing a maxi yacht offshore from a helicopter or being in a photo boat with a fleet of F1 powerboats approaching at speed you have only seconds in which to make the right decisions, gauge your position, prepare, frame and shoot the subject. It can prove quite an adrenaline buzz.”
The exhibition, sponsored by sailingnetworks.com, will run throughout July and August in WPNSA’s function room Spinnakers, which boasts breathtaking views across Portland Harbour and the Jurassic Coast. Entry will be free and all of the shots will be available for purchase.

Youngster Gives Back to The Chesil Trust
27 May 2008
Local Dorset youngster, Adam Greaves, who was recently awarded his RYA stage 1 and 2 qualifications thanks to charitable donations from Chesil Trust, has given back to the charity through donating a self raised £117.00.
In addition to Adam’s generosity, Southwell Business Park matched the funds raised by Adam, so that a total of £234 was donated to the Chesil Trust.
Adam comments, “Sailing is not a sport that I would have been able to do without the help from the Chesil Trust. I had a great time on the RYA training course and I’m really happy that I raised this money for the Chesil Trust. Hopefully someone else my age can now do the same course and learn how to sail! I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who sponsored me and helped me raise this money.”
From the Chesil Trust funding that Adam initially received, his interest in sailing has gone from strength to strength. Since completing his initial course, Adam has gone on to join the weekly 'Onboard Club' at SailLaser and has taken part in a Weekend Regatta, again in conjunction with Saillaser. He is currently saving hard to fund stage 3 and 4 of the RYA course.
A Dorset based charity, the Chesil Trust assists local young or disabled people to engage in sailing and other watersports. The Chesil Trust, SailLaser, Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy and Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre are actively working together to provide reduced-rate community sailing programmes.
Ray Bulpit, Managing Director at Southwell Business Park, adds, “I was so impressed to hear that a young member of our community had initiated fundraising of this kind. The fact that the raised money was being donated to the Chesil Trust, a fantastic local charity, only increased my desire to add to Adam’s efforts.”
Ray Bulpit and Adam Greaves were both in attendance at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on the 23 May to hand over the money to John Tweed, Clerk to the Trustees of the Chesil Trust.
John Tweed comments, “It is fantastic that someone the Chesil Trust has already helped fund is now fundraising himself and giving other youngsters the same opportunity. Donation such as Adam’s and Southwell Business Park’s, allow us to continue to offer discounted sailing initiatives. In this case a child showing promise in sailing will be offered the chance to participate in a SailLaser taught course, giving them the opportunity to gain their own RYA qualifications and to participate regularly in the sport.”
Adam’s inventiveness and generosity has also been recognised by the Chairman of LOCOG, Lord Sebastian Coe, who sent a letter to him praising his efforts. In his letter, Seb Coe comments, “We wanted to congratulate Adam for his excellent work in donating to SailLaser and the Chesil Trust. Donations such as these allow for the continual development of community sailing at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, providing opportunities to build a sporting legacy.”

National Sailing Academy and lead sponsor Scottish and Southern Energy celebrate awards win
2 May 2008
The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), along with its leading sponsor Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE), has won a prestigious Sport Industry Award. The pair were awarded the Environmental Concern in Sport Award for their entry Scottish and Southern Energy, powering the National Sailing Academy, at a star-studded central London ceremony last night (Thursday 1 May).
The Sport Industry Awards is the biggest event of its kind in Europe, recognising and rewarding commercial achievement in UK sport in marketing, PR, sponsorship and digital media. To the entering agencies, brands and governing bodies, it is a chance to showcase their endeavours of the year in front of their peers and the wider industry, with the Awards now considered the highest endorsement of accomplishment in the world of sport.
The judges rewarded a programme that showed a “discernible legacy of environmental concern in action” - as a result of the sponsorship, the Academy’s level of renewable electricity increased by 37% in 2007, while SSE has immeasurably improved the performance of its emerging technologies from an environmental standpoint.
Anna Crampin, Partnerships Manager at Scottish and Southern Energy, comments, “It is a fantastic achievement to have won this Award. Working with a high profile venue such as WPNSA has provided us with both a vital test-bed and a platform to showcase our emerging renewable technologies and products. As well as providing a full environmental impact assessment, an active recycling programme and renewable energy on site, our sponsorship also donated funds for the Academy’s youth development and reduced-rate community sailing schemes.”
The association means that the Academy is on track to achieve a target set by LOCOG that 20% of electricity generated be done so using renewable energy by the end of 2011.
Mark Stubbings, Chief Executive of WPNSA, adds, “I am absolutely delighted that we have won this Award. I would like to thank SSE for their continued support of the Academy and for their work with us on our environmental policies and legacy development programmes. Without the support of our sponsors, it would be extremely difficult for us to continue to offer our reduced-rate community sailing programmes that ensure we get as many local youngsters as possible out on the water and involved in an active and healthy life. Similarly, we would not be in the position we are in today – that of being one of the most environmentally conscious venues in the UK - without SSE.”

Youngsters achieve RYA qualifications with help from the Chesil trust
31 March 2008
Two Dorset youngsters have been awarded their RYA stage 1 and 2 qualifications thanks to charitable donations from the Chesil Trust.
Adam Greaves, from Portland Southwell Primary School, and Shannon Kinnersley, an ex Wyke Junior School member who now attends Budmouth School, were awarded their RYA certificates on Friday 28th March by Bill Ludlow, Chairman of the Trustees of the Chesil Trust, at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.
The £650 that has funded this opportunity for Adam and Shannon was raised at a charity auction held by the Yacht Clubs of Weymouth, in support of the Chesil Trust, during the Weymouth Regatta earlier this year.
The Yacht Clubs of Weymouth came up with the idea for the auction having already raised funds for the ‘Sail for £5’ initiative that ran the previous year. Their aim was to help select young people who showed promise during ‘Sail for £5’ and who could benefit from further tuition - Adam and Shannon were lucky enough to be selected by SailLaser, who ran the ‘Sail for £5 course’. A Dorset based charity, the Chesil Trust assists local young or disabled people to engage in sailing and other watersports.
Shannon Kinnersley comments, “We had a brilliant time on the RYA training course. I am really pleased with my certificates.”
Bill Ludlow adds, “The donations we receive at the Chesil Trust allow us to offer discounted sailing initiatives aimed at getting as many local youngsters out on the water as possible. I would like to thank all those who have already contributed to the Trust, either directly or through our fundraising events – as you can see, your donations are really making a difference to young people’s lives. Local law firm donates £5000 to WPNSA
10 March 2008
Local law firm Battens Solicitors Ltd, through their Charitable Trust, have handed over a grant for £5,000 to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. The grant will go towards funding for WPNSA’s reduced-rate local sailing initiatives. The cheque was presented to WPNSA’s Director of Development John Tweed by Ray Edwards, Director at Battens Solicitors and a Trustee of the Charitable Trust.
John Tweed comments, “Battens Charitable Trust has, from time to time, donated money to the Sailing Academy. So far, thanks to donations such as theirs, WPNSA has seen over 1,000 local children get out on the water for as little as £5. Battens’ generous donation allows us to continue to offer discounted sailing for the local community, ensuring greater participation in sailing by all. As a not for profit company, such donations are extremely valuable, and we are most grateful to Battens for their continuing support.”
Battens Charitable Trust was established 21 years ago when the then partners identified the need for such a charity, and each year Battens Solicitors contribute to the fund. During 2007, the Trust has donated more than £23,000 in grants to charities and local causes across Somerset and Dorset.
Ray Edwards comments, "Battens was founded in 1706 and we have been serving the legal needs of commercial and private clients in Somerset and Dorset for over 300 years. The grants awarded by Battens Charitable Trust offer important and valuable support to our local communities. As a business we believe it is important to help our community and we are pleased to be able to continue to give this object priority.”
The cheque was presented at one of Battens’ regular ‘Business Breakfast’ meetings at the Academy. The Battens Business Breakfasts are held at the Academy every other month with the aim of encouraging discussion on the impact of the 2012 Games and to promote networking amongst local businesses in and around the Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester area. Tickets for the breakfast are £9.00 and include a full English breakfast. Guests are asked to arrive at 7.30am for a 7.45am breakfast, with a presentation at 8am. If you would like to attend future breakfast meetings, please contact Sarah Skinner, on 01935 846068 or email her on s.skinner@battens.co.uk

WPNSA extends agreement with Sail Laser
29 February 2008
The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy has signed a new long term agreement with SailLaser, the world class sailing school based on the Academy site.
SailLaser offers a wide range of RYA courses for all levels. The centre also runs corporate days and advanced class-specific courses with the UK’s best coaches and sailors. Various reduced-rate community programs, aimed at involving as many local people as possible in sailing, are run out of the Academy through SailLaser.
The Academy, together with SailLaser, the Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre and local Charity The Chesil Trust, continued to run and expand the Sail for £5 initiative started in 2004. It has proved a phenomenal success. In 2004 76 young people benefited from the scheme, in 2005 this number had grown to 133, 253 young people took to the water in 2006, but in 2007 this number increased to 1051. Similar programmes are set to run in 2008, with new additions to the programme for adults and disadvantaged teenagers. This growth does, however, rely on The Chesil Trust raising sufficient funds to enable this expansion to take place.
SailLaser has also linked up Weymouth College and the Academy as part of a nationwide initiative to tackle the number of youngsters not in employment and not in education. The e2e (Entry to Employment) course, run out of the SailLaser centre at the Academy, is ideal for young people with an interest in water sports, the outdoors or just sport in general, equipping them with the basic certificates they need to start a career in the marine industry.
Matt Bridge, Centre Manger at SailLaser, commented, “It’s great news that our agreement with WPNSA has been extended. Our expert tuition and range of classes, combined with the facilities at the Academy, make for an unbeatable place to learn to sail. In conjunction with the Academy, we remain committed to helping more local youngsters get involved with sailing. 2008 will see us extend our community sailing programme, as well as offering new BTEC and Diplomas courses through Weymouth College.”
Mark Stubbings, Chief Executive of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy added, “SailLaser offers professional, friendly, RYA trained instructors; anyone passing through their sailing school can be assured that they will receive the highest possible level of tuition. Access and affordability are often barriers to take-up, but the Academy and SailLaser have been proactive in helping to drive down the costs of courses for local children. The Academy is also the perfect place to host a corporate sailing day, with excellent on-shore dining and conferencing facilities combined with expert coaching. If you would like to find out more about our corporate sailing days, please contact us on 01305 866000.”

Weymouth College has been awarded Fifteen Young Apprenticeship places for the 2008/2009 academic year. In an extension of their close partnership, the students on the Young Apprenticeships sports programme in Sailing and Watersports will be based at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.

The programme is completed over two years (yr 10 and 11). Courses will take place over two days per week alongside core national curriculum subjects (English, Maths, science etc.). However, the courses are very flexible, and the work experience can be fitted in around the core subjects and during weekends, schools holidays and evenings.
Holly Henderson, Sailing Curriculum Development Officer comments, “This is a fantastic development for students in the Borough. The opportunity for youngsters to move onto a Young Apprenticeship sports programme in Sailing and Watersports is very exciting. As part of the on-going curriculum developments here at Weymouth College, we are delighted to extend our provision into this area.”
Mark Stubbings, Chief Executive of the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy adds, “I am delighted that more local youngsters will be given the opportunity to take advantage of the excellent initiatives being developed by Weymouth College. WPNSA working with South Western Ambulance Service
21 February 2008
The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy and the South Western Ambulance Service have been reviewing and developing the requirements for medical cover afloat and ashore in preparation for major sailing events that are to be held at the Academy.
Chris Chambers, who has been appointed Project Manager for the Dorset Primary Care Trust and the South Western Ambulance Service, went afloat to watch a training camp at the Academy in early February.
Chris comments, “Being able to go out on a safety boat at the training camp has given the Ambulance Service vital insight and experience of how a big event works at the Academy. It has been an extremely useful and educational experience in terms of preparing an effective model for the medical cover that will be provided at all major sailing events. We will be continuing to work closely with WPNSA to ensure that we provide the very best medical assistance possible.”
Mark Stubbings, Chief Executive of the Weymouth and Portland National Academy, adds, “The safety of competitors and spectators at the Academy is always our first concern. We already have stringent health and safety measures in place and, together with the South Western Ambulance Service, we are working towards finalising a cohesive and seamless medical plan for all our sailing events.”

Weymouth youngster receives marine achievement award
18 January 2008
Joe Warley, Weymouth College e2e Student, picked up the Marine Achievement Award at Weymouth Pavilion last week (Thursday 10 th January 2008). The award was presented by John Tweed, Director of Development at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy where Joe completed his Entry to Employment (e2e) course in December.
Commenting on his win, Joe Warley said; "I had a brilliant time on the course and am looking forward to starting my new job in March. I was surprised to be nominated and very pleased to be presented with the award!"
Dr Holly Henderson, Sailing Curriculum Development Officer at Weymouth College, commented; "This is a fantastic moment for Joe and we are all very proud of what he has achieved on the e2e programme and wish him every success in his new job. The e2e programme was the first of our new sailing curriculum courses to be delivered from WPNSA last July, and we are also delivering BTECs in Sport (Sailing and Watersports) to local Secondary School Students. In September we will be running an increased portfolio of Sailing and Marine courses from BTEC Short Courses, BTECs at Introductory, First and National Level, to Foundation Degrees. It is a very exciting time for both Weymouth College and the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy."
Conal Low-Grier added; "We are all delighted for Joe. The Sailing and Marine curriculum is a rapidly growing area for the Sports and Public Services Department here at the College and Joe is a fantastic example for other students."
The e2e course, run out of the Academy, is ideal for young people with an interest in water sports, the outdoors or just sport in general, equipping them with the basic certificates they need to start a career in the marine industry. Plenty of time is set aside to develop personal and social skills and to work on numeracy and literacy levels, combined with crucial work placements with local businesses tailored to give a range of experience in this diverse industry.
John Tweed added, "All of us here at the Academy are delighted for Joe - this is a fantastic achievement and we wish him the very best of luck in his future. We continue to offer our world class venue as a base for the e2e courses and look forward to welcoming more youngsters on this life-changing course in the near future."
