Sea Hive

Sea Hives at WPNSA

A Living Marine Classroom

WPNSA is proud to host a Sea Hive on our pontoons, a dynamic initiative that blends marine conservation, education, and community engagement. Installed in January 2024 by the Sea Cadets Portland, the Sea Hive was made possible through funding secured by SeaLife Weymouth from The Sea Life Trust.

This innovative structure serves as both a habitat and a hands-on learning platform. It is actively used by Sea Cadets for team-building exercises and environmental education, forming a key part of their environmental enhancement programme. The Sea Hive encourages young people to connect with marine ecosystems and understand the importance of biodiversity and sustainability.

A Thriving Ecosystem in Just Six Months

In a remarkably short time, the Sea Hive has become a vibrant underwater habitat. Within six months of installation, its surfaces have been colonised by a rich community of filter-feeding animals. Solitary tunicates dominate the structure, accompanied by hydrozoans, bryozoans, and fan worms, creating a diverse and thriving micro-ecosystem.

This rapid development highlights the effectiveness of Sea Hives in promoting marine life and enhancing local biodiversity. It also provides a unique opportunity for cadets and visitors to observe ecological processes up close.
